Boy, 13, Pleads Guilty to Killing Teen Girl Because He Falsely Thought She Was Pregnant

An Ohio teenager killed a 14-year-old girl after she told him she thought she was pregnant — he reportedly feared he was the father.

In March, 14-year-old Sylvia McGee was fatally shot by a 13-year-old boy (PEOPLE is withholding his name due to his age).

On Wednesday, in juvenile court, the teen boy pleaded true— the equivalent of guilty— to murder, Stark County Assistant Prosecutor Michelle Cordova tells PEOPLE.

Cordova says the perpetrator had told police he and McGee believed she was pregnant with his child.

“That is what I believe got this whole thing started,” Cordova said on Wednesday, according to the Canton Repository. “There was no evidence of any other reason for this.”

But McGee was not actually pregnant, Cordova says, citing an autopsy.

“It’s still not closure,” Carlina Hanley, McGee’s great aunt, told the Repository after the hearing. ”[He] should have just admitted it from the beginning. She didn’t deserve that…She wasn’t that type of a kid. She was upbeat and funny. I just can’t believe that he did that.”

McGee was in the eighth grade at the Compton Learning Center’s Connections Program, WKYC reports.

“[She] was always funny, smiling, nothing ever dragged her down, not one thing,” the victim’s friend Tabitha McCarthy told the station after her death.

Before her death, McGee hoped to become a beautician.

“She talked about owning her own business,” Hanley said, according to the Repository. “She talked about moving to New York and taking her maternal grandmother with her.”

“I knew that she could always excel in life, in anything that she chose to do,” she continued. “She wanted everybody to get along. She wanted everybody to just be friends — that’s just the type of personality she had.”

Attorney information for the teen boy was unavailable Tuesday. He was not tried as an adult because he was 13 at the time of the crime. He accepted a plea agreement that brought an aggravated murder charge down to murder.

As part of the plea, the teen will remain behind bars in a youth prison until he is 21 and will undergo a psych evaluation. If he is deemed a serious youthful offender, Cordova says the boy would face time in adult prison of 18 years to life.

He will be sentenced in January.

Man caught at Houston airport with 35 pounds of liquid cocaine in shampoo bottles

HOUSTON – Authorities say a man was caught attempting to smuggle 35 pounds of liquid cocaine in 24 full-sized shampoo bottles at a Houston airport.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, officers working at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport intercepted the traveler, a 26-year-old Colombian citizen, as he retrieved his checked baggage from the luggage carousel.

CBP says officers questioned the passenger, and that interaction led them to conduct a baggage search where they discovered the two dozen shampoo bottles concealing the liquid cocaine valued at $400,000.

Authorities say a K9 alerted to the bottles in a manner to indicate the presence of narcotics, and a test conducted by officers indicated the substance was cocaine.

“Our officers are the first line of defense at our ports of entry, so they are trained in the various smuggling methods people use to bring illicit goods into the U.S.,” said CBP Port Director Shawn Polley. “We take every opportunity to intercept those illicit goods before they enter our communities, in this case it was 35 pounds of liquid cocaine.”

CBP says the would-be smuggler was returned to Colombia, and the narcotics were seized and turned over to the Houston Police Department for further investigation.

Student Accused Roommate’s Boyfriend of Sex Assault, Was Allegedly Strangled by Him Days Later

Newly released court documents reveal the final moments of Clark Atlanta University student Alexis Crawford’s life before she was killed, allegedly by her roommate and the roommate’s boyfriend.

An arrest warrant alleges that on Oct. 31, Alexis was strangled by her roommate’s boyfriend Barron Brantley, 21, after getting into a fight with her roommate, Jordyn Jones, in their off-campus apartment, WSBTV reports.

The fight came hours after Alexis and Jones had gone to get alcohol late at night, the warrant says. The fight had already turned physical before Brantley got involved, according to the warrant.

During the altercation, Brantley allegedly choked Alexis until she died, the warrant states, ABC News reports.

“Afterwards Jones and Brantley placed Alexis Crawford in a plastic bin and transported her body to Exchange Park in Decatur, GA, where they placed her body in the woods,” states an Atlanta Police Department report obtained by WSBTV.

Some employees at a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in the Chicago area have lost their jobs after an alleged incident of racism against a group of black customers.

The alleged incident happened last month at a Buffalo Wild Wings in the Chicago suburb of Naperville.

Speaking to Chicago ABC station WLS, Justin and Mary Vahl of Montgomery, Illinois, said they arrived at the restaurant with their family and friends to celebrate a birthday when a host inquired about their race, saying a “regular” customer is seated next to their reserved table and doesn’t want to sit near black people. But the couple told the host to seat their group there anyway.

After the group sat down, several other employees approached their table on separate occasions to try to get them to move, claiming their table is actually reserved for another party. They finally decided to leave for another restaurant and filed a complaint with upper-level management, the couple told WLS.

“Blueberries are some of the most antioxidant-packed foods, especially relative to their calorie intake,” says Melissa Majumdar, MS, RD, CSOWM, LDN, registered dietitian and national media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Half a cup of blueberries contains only 40 calories.”

The health benefits of these tiny berries are pretty massive.

“Blueberries are highest in vitamin K, manganese, vitamin C, and fiber,” says Majumdar.

But the biggest reason men should be adding blueberries to their diet is because of their heart and metabolism benefits.

“Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States,” says Majumdar. “And anthocyanins, which give blueberries their rich, deep color, can contribute to cardiovascular protection,” says Majumdar.

Research indicates blueberries may improve heart health because of their influence on cholesterol levels and endothelial function. While more research is needed, preliminary research indicates that blueberries may also help manage blood pressure.

The Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow Up Study also show that individuals with a higher consumption of fruit, especially those high in anthocyanins like blueberries, were associated with decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

“It’s estimated that 23 percent of men have metabolic syndrome, a precursor to diabetes and heart disease,” says Majumdar. “Adding blueberries to our diet, especially in the place of higher sugar, fat, or salt-laden foods, could absolutely improve health.”

If you’re looking for some ways to incorporate blueberries into your diet, here are some tips from Majumdar:

1/2 cup of blueberries = 1 serving of fruit

Breakfast – Add to oatmeal or whole grain pancakes in lieu of syrup or sweetener, or to a plate of eggs for a burst of color and fiber.
Snack – Pair with cottage cheese or yogurt, or mix into a smoothie. Take unsweetened freeze-dried blueberries on the go for a crunchy and healthy treat.
Lunch – Add to a salad or mix into a fruit salad. You could even mix them with mint and feta into a cold grain salad. Try it with quinoa or farro for a filling lunch side.
Dinner – Blend into a salad dressing or for a dipping sauce. Mix with some plain Greek yogurt, fresh herbs, and olive oil and spin in the blender.
Snack – Munch on berries right out of the pint or try them frozen for a late night treat. Pair with some walnuts for a superfood combo!

Doctor Suspended After Delivering a Baby Without Eyes, Nose or Part of His Skull

A Portuguese doctor has been suspended by the country’s medical council after a baby born in his care did not have eyes, nose or part of his skull.
According to the parents, Dr. Artur Carvalho never mentioned seeing any abnormalities during the three ultrasound scans he performed during the pregnancy, the BBC reported. Nor during a fourth, 5D ultrasound during the sixth month of pregnancy, when they allegedly specifically asked whether Carvalho could see any potential issues and he said no.

“He explained that sometimes some parts of the face are not visible [on ultrasounds] … when the baby’s face is glued to the belly of the mother,” the baby’s aunt told a local broadcaster, AFP reported.

But when their son Rodrigo was born on Oct. 7, he was missing part of his face. The parents submitted a complaint to the Portuguese Prosecutor’s Office, and the Portugal medical council, Ordem dos Medicos, voted to suspend Carvalho for six months while they investigate.

Several other complaints against Carvalho have since come out, the BBC reported, including one from 2011 of a baby born with severe brain damage and leg and facial deformities. The child is now 8, according to Público, a daily newspaper in Portugal, and cannot walk or talk, despite undergoing multiple operations.

Rodrigo was only expected to live for a few hours, but he has made through over two weeks at the hospital.

Carvalho initially agreed to stop practicing while the Ordem dos Médicos investigated the latest complaint, but they later decided to suspend him for six months.

Alexandre Valentim Lourenco, the medical council chief for Portugal’s southern region told a local broadcaster that there is “strong evidence” that Carvalho did not properly care for his patients. He added that Carvalho’s suspension will hopefully “reassure” pregnant women now that he is no longer practicing.

College bribery scandal tip stemmed from pharma pump-and-dump investigation

The Wall Street Journal reported that Morrie Tobin tipped off investigators about the college bribery scheme, which ensnared a biotech investor earlier this week.

The nationwide college admissions scandal that earlier this week swept up a prominent biotech venture capital investor started with another investor who was under investigation for securities fraud involving a drug company, according to a news report.

Citing a person familiar with the investigation, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the scandal began with a tip from Morrie Tobin, a Los Angeles resident who was under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission for a pump-and-dump investment scheme. The alleged scheme involved two companies that Tobin secretly controlled, one of which was CURE Pharmaceutical Holding Corp., according to an SEC complaint. The SEC said that Tobin conspired with three others to sell his shares at a profit by not registering the sales with the SEC, disclosing his ownership or complying with limitations on stock sales. As such, they allegedly disguised a dump of shares as ordinary trading by unaffiliated investors. The other company the commission alleges Tobin controlled was Environmental Packaging Technologies Holdings.

According to the Journal, Tobin – a Yale University alumnus – told investigators the head of the Yale women’s soccer team had sought a bribe to get his daughter into the university, which led them to the larger scheme. According to the Department of Justice, at least 50 wealthy individuals in eight states allegedly bribed athletic and admissions officials at elite universities to enable cheating on entrance exams and false athletic recruitment in order to get their children into the schools. Universities involved included Yale, Stanford, the University of Southern California, Wake Forest and Georgetown.

One of the individuals arrested was Manuel Henriquez, founder and CEO of Hercules Capital, a hedge fund and venture capital firm based in Palo Alto, California, that has a significant presence in life sciences investment. Henriquez and his wife, Elizabeth, turned themselves in to authorities in New York and were released on $500,000 bond after an appearance in federal court. They are expected to appear in a federal court in Boston on March 29, according to federal prosecutors. Actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were also arrested in connection with the scheme.

Woman, 33, who blamed cramps on stress is diagnosed with colon cancer

Married woman, 33, who thought she had indigestion for two years brought on by stress from her high-powered job and a food truck diet is diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer

At 33 years old, Diana Zepeda was a fairly typical Washington, DC resident: working long hours in a stressful job, eating whatever was available when she had a minute to spare, past the invincibility of her 20s, and feeling the physical consequences.
Her friends, too, were developing one food intolerance after another, so between her lifestyle and stress levels, it seemed reasonable that Zepeda’s stomach started acting up.

Now, six months later, Zepeda has had radiation, chemotherapy and a sizable portion of her digestive system removed.

She is one of an alarming and growing number of young people developing the disease, which was once thought to be an illness of older people only.

Zepeda endured relatively mild symptoms like bouts of diarrhea for two years, blaming her own diet before going to a doctor.

Now, at the end of six months of chemotherapy, she warns that early action might have saved her from several invasive surgeries and the partial loss of several organs.
