A former Thailand navy SEAL has died while working to save 12 boys and their coach from the submerged Tham Luang cave complex, the New York Times reports. The death comes as a heavy blow to the rescue mission, as monsoon rains threaten further flooding and as oxygen levels inside the chamber have started to drop.
Around 1:00 am local time this morning, Saman Gunan, a 38-year-old retired Thai navy SEAL, was on his way out of the cave system after delivering extra oxygen canisters a long the route to the trapped boys and their coach when he ran out of oxygen and lost consciousness. His partner, who was unable to revive him, brought his body back to the mouth of the cave.
“His job was to deliver oxygen,” Passakorn Boonyaluck, the deputy governor of the Chiang Rai region, told reporters. “He did not have enough on his way back.”
(CNN) One man and four children are dead after a standoff of more than 20 hours, Orlando police Chief John Mina said.
Mina said officers were in contact with Gary Lindsey Jr., directly and indirectly, by phone throughout the day Monday after he shot an officer around 11:45 p.m. Sunday and barricaded himself in an apartment with the four children, ages 1, 6, 10 and 11.
They had gone to the apartment in response to a domestic violence call from Lindsey’s girlfriend.
At one point, Mina said, officers tried to give Lindsey another phone because his WiFi phone had a bad connection, and during the exchange they saw that one of the children was dead.

Officers entered the apartment around 9 p.m. Monday, Mina said, and found the children dead of gunshot wounds in two bedrooms. Lindsey’s body was found in a closet with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Mina said two children are believed to be Lindsey’s and two are his girlfriend’s.
WICHITA, Kan. — A woman who led an investigator to the decomposing remains of her 5-year-old stepson three months after reporting him missing was found dead early Friday in a Wichita home with three suicide notes and a rifle at her feet, police said.
Officer Charley Davidson said during a press briefing that officers responded around 1:40 a.m. after Jonathan Hernandez called to report finding his former girlfriend, Emily Glass, dead of a gunshot wound at his Wichita home.
Hernandez said in a statement that Glass killed herself. Davidson said the official cause of death will be determined by the coroner’s office. He said he didn’t know whether Glass was living at the home or who owned the rifle. Davidson did not say to whom the three suicide notes were addressed.
The Centers for Disease Control reports a nearly 30-percent rise in suicides since 1999 in a newly released report. Only about half of those people had a diagnosed mental health condition. Many who died by suicide had been struggling with substance abuse, finances, stable housing or personal relationships.

Anthony Bourdain, the celebrity chef and citizen of the world who inspired millions to share his delight in food and the bonds it created, was found dead in his hotel room Friday in France while working on his CNN series on culinary traditions. He was 61.
CNN confirmed the death, saying that Bourdain was found unresponsive Friday morning by friend and chef Eric Ripert in the French city of Haut-Rhin. It called his death a suicide. Bourdain’s assistant Laurie Woolever would not comment when reached by The Associated Press.

The World Health Organisation says the nipah disease spreading through a state in southwest India could cause a global epidemic.
Emergency measures have been imposed across the southwestern state of Kerala following the emergence of the nipah virus, which causes flu-like symptoms leading to an agonising brain-swelling condition known as encephalitis.

Verne Troyer, the actor best-known for portraying Mini Me in the “Austin Powers” trilogy has died. He was 49.
The news of the actor’s death was reported on his Instagram account on Saturday afternoon.
“It is with great sadness and incredibly heavy hearts to write that Verne passed away today,” a post to the account read.
“Over the years he’s struggled and won, struggled and won, struggled and fought some more, but unfortunately this time was too much,” the post continued.
A cause of death was not revealed.
Earlier this month, Troyer was hospitalized after his friends called 911 saying the actor was drunk and suicidal. He was reportedly held for 72 hours for an evaluation, according to TMZ.

The 2 ft. 8 in. actor has battled alcoholism for years and nearly died from alcohol poisoning in 2002.
Troyer portrayed Mini Me, the sidekick to Mike Myers’ character Dr. Evil, in the 1999 film “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me” and the 2002 flick “Austin Powers in Goldmember.”
He was briefly married to Playboy model Genevieve Gallen for less than a year in 2004. In 2006, he appeared on the reality series “The Surreal Life” where he was often shown intoxicated.
The actor has made sporadic appearances in films and TV shows since “Austin Powers” and has upcoming roles listed in the 2018 film “Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens and Geeks” and “The 420 Movie: Mary & Jane.”
