Some employees at a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in the Chicago area have lost their jobs after an alleged incident of racism against a group of black customers.

The alleged incident happened last month at a Buffalo Wild Wings in the Chicago suburb of Naperville.

Speaking to Chicago ABC station WLS, Justin and Mary Vahl of Montgomery, Illinois, said they arrived at the restaurant with their family and friends to celebrate a birthday when a host inquired about their race, saying a “regular” customer is seated next to their reserved table and doesn’t want to sit near black people. But the couple told the host to seat their group there anyway.

After the group sat down, several other employees approached their table on separate occasions to try to get them to move, claiming their table is actually reserved for another party. They finally decided to leave for another restaurant and filed a complaint with upper-level management, the couple told WLS.

The One Food Men Should Eat Every Day

Summer is the season for fruit. From fresh watermelon to ripe strawberries, it’s the best time to add some fresh produce into your diet, and one of the best additions for men specifically is blueberries. Regardless of the season, you should always have a pint of juicy blueberries on hand. Plus, see the 40 Foods Nutritionists Eat Every Day.

“Blueberries are some of the most antioxidant-packed foods, especially relative to their calorie intake,” says Melissa Majumdar, MS, RD, CSOWM, LDN, registered dietitian and national media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Half a cup of blueberries contains only 40 calories.”

The health benefits of these tiny berries are pretty massive.

“Blueberries are highest in vitamin K, manganese, vitamin C, and fiber,” says Majumdar.

But the biggest reason men should be adding blueberries to their diet is because of their heart and metabolism benefits. 

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States,” says Majumdar. “And anthocyanins, which give blueberries their rich, deep color, can contribute to cardiovascular protection,” says Majumdar.

Research indicates blueberries may improve heart health because of their influence on cholesterol levels and endothelial function. While more research is needed, preliminary research indicates that blueberries may also help manage blood pressure

The Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow Up Study also show that individuals with a higher consumption of fruit, especially those high in anthocyanins like blueberries, were associated with decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

“It’s estimated that 23 percent of men have metabolic syndrome, a precursor to diabetes and heart disease,” says Majumdar. “Adding blueberries to our diet, especially in the place of higher sugar, fat, or salt-laden foods, could absolutely improve health.”

If you’re looking for some ways to incorporate blueberries into your diet, here are some tips from Majumdar:

1/2 cup of blueberries = 1 serving of fruit

  • Breakfast – Add to oatmeal or whole grain pancakes in lieu of syrup or sweetener, or to a plate of eggs for a burst of color and fiber.
  • Snack – Pair with cottage cheese or yogurt, or mix into a smoothie. Take unsweetened freeze-dried blueberries on the go for a crunchy and healthy treat.
  • Lunch – Add to a salad or mix into a fruit salad. You could even mix them with mint and feta into a cold grain salad. Try it with quinoa or farro for a filling lunch side.
  • Dinner – Blend into a salad dressing or for a dipping sauce. Mix with some plain Greek yogurt, fresh herbs, and olive oil and spin in the blender.
  • Snack – Munch on berries right out of the pint or try them frozen for a late night treat. Pair with some walnuts for a superfood combo!

Why Did a Student Die After Eating 5-Day-Old Pasta? Doctor Explains

For many, meal prep is key to maintaining a healthy diet and saving money, but if you elect to make your food days in advance, make sure to store it properly.

A famous case that recently resurfaced is that of a 20-year-old Belgian student who reheated spaghetti with tomato sauce after it had been left out in the kitchen for five days. The 2008 case was featured in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and spotlighted on the YouTube channel Chubbyemu, which profiles strange medical tales.

In this case, the student, who was not named, became ill within a half-hour of consuming the pasta, suffering intestinal distress, nausea and a headache, the medical journal reported. He decided to try to sleep off the symptoms, drinking water and not taking any medicine or seeking medical attention. He nodded off at midnight after hours of vomiting.

The next morning, he was found dead by his parents. An autopsy showed he likely died about 10 hours after eating the pasta and that his liver had completely shut down and he was suffering from pancreatitis.

So what happened? The student suffered from something known as “fried rice syndrome.”

“[It’s] a generic term for a form of food poisoning, which is actually quite virulent, potentially lethal, which is caused by a specific … bacteria called Bacillus cereus,” Dr. Andrew Ordon of “The Doctors” told InsideEdition.com.

The bacteria multiplies rapidly in food left out at room temperature, particularly rice, lending the illness caused by the microbes its distinctive name.

Pasta is another such food that, when not refrigerated, can create the ideal environment for B. cereus to thrive. That’s why it’s important to make sure to store food properly. “If you consume it you can get really sick,” Ordon said.

The Belgian student isn’t alone. Ordon pointed out several other cases of people who became violently ill after eating food contaminated with B. cereus. “There was one reported story a family went on a picnic, they cooked pasta, made it into pasta salad, so it had been sitting out for some time. … They got very sick, in fact one of the family members died,” he said.

Another case Ordon addressed actually involved fried rice. “In Texas, a woman went to a Chinese restaurant, a buffet … she got very, very sick [and] went into liver failure,” he said.

In 2018, Inside Edition spoke to the woman in question. Germaine Mobley said she became sick after dining at a restaurant just outside Dallas. “I started having problems breathing and my husband called an ambulance,” she recalled.

Mobley ended up in the intensive care unit for eight days afterward but survived.

Ordon has a few tips to stay safe.

“It’s important to remember when you cook food, you need to put it in the refrigerator, whether it’s hot food or cold food,” said Ordon. “Make sure it’s refrigerated, don’t keep it too long. And there are certain foods that are a real setup: Pasta, rice, soups, sauces.

“Make sure that when you cook them, you do refrigerate and don’t keep them around for too long.”

What’s really inside a chicken nugget???

Nobody walks into (or drives through) a fast food restaurant expecting to order a health food. But you might, at the very least, expect that what you order is, well, what you order. Chicken is chicken and beef is beef, right? Think again: What many fast food meals feature is real-life mystery meat.

Take, for instance, the chicken nugget. A paper published online last month by The American Journal of Medicine looked at two nuggets from two different, unidentified national fast food chains: Each was comprised of just 50 percent or less muscle tissue, which is what we typically define as chicken, Reuters reported. The rest of the pair of nuggets was made up of a hodgepodge of pure fat, blood vessels, pieces of bone, nerves and cartilage.

“What has happened is that some companies have chosen to use an artificial mixture of chicken parts rather than low-fat chicken white meat, batter it up and fry it and still call it chicken,” lead author Dr. Richard D. deShazo, of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, told Reuters Health. “It is really a chicken by-product high in calories, salt, sugar and fat that is a very unhealthy choice.”

Beyond the obvious gross-out factor, these chicken bits probably aren’t particularly harmful, explains David Katz, M.D., founding director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center and author of the new book Disease Proof. But they’re definitely not doing the body any good, and typically have a poorer overall nutrition profile compared to plain white-meat chicken.

“It stands to reason that the enormous, high volume mass production of model-shaped chicken bits — that are then concealed inside breading — would not be made from the best parts of chicken because the best parts of chicken are more expensive,” he tells HuffPost. “All of this is, of course, substantially less nutritious than what we typically think of as chicken.”

McDonald’s serves pregnant Canadian cleaning fluid latte

McDonald’s has issued an apology after an expectant mother in Canada was served cleaning solution instead of the latte she ordered.

Sarah Douglas, who is eight months pregnant, asked for the coffee at a drive-thru in the province of Alberta last Sunday morning.

She took a sip a short while later only to discover the brownish liquid in her cup was not coffee and milk.

Ms Douglas pulled her car over and immediately spat out the substance.

She drove back to McDonald’s and told one of the employees she wanted to speak to the supervisor, she told Lethbridge News Now.

“I showed him the coffee and he had asked if I wanted a new one, and I said, ‘absolutely not, this is unacceptable,'” she told the news site.

The restaurant franchisee said in a statement he was sorry for the incident.

He explained that the machine had been cleaned as usual that morning but the milk supply line to the latte machine had not been disconnected from the cleaning solution while Ms Douglas’ drink was prepared.

“We have taken immediate action to review the proper cleaning procedures with the team and have put additional signage up as an added reminder,” said franchisee Dan Brown.

The pregnant mother of two told Global News that she feels fine but nonetheless visited her doctor as a precaution.

Panera is the restaurant that just keeps giving and giving to carb lovers everywhere. First, the company announced that they would be rolling out four new cheesy items, including the Baja Mac & Cheese. And now, Panera has just revealed their latest food-forward invention: the double bread bowl.

The new option is a loaf of bread with not one, but two holes created in it, designed for ordering two different soups or mac and cheese. The double bread bowl comes in perfect time with fall right around the corner when soup consumption flourishes.

McDonald’s Big Mac is turning 50, and it’s still America’s essential burger

On Sunday, the chain unveiled the MacCoin, a “global currency” that can be redeemed for a free burger at McDonald’s locations around the world. Customers can receive a MacCoin with the purchase of a Big Mac on Thursday, August 2, to be redeemed starting the next day at McDonald’s in more than 50 countries around the world.
“It’s not often that any food item is as relevant today as it was 50 years ago,” McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook told Business Insider’s Kate Taylor in a recent interview.

Gourmands and chefs may quibble, but at the end of the day, nothing can beat the Big Mac on three crucial points: It’s cheap, it’s consistent, and it’s downright good.

It’s America’s burger. There’s even a museum dedicated to it in Pennsylvania.
I recently pit the signature burgers at Burger King, McDonald’s, and Wendy’s against each other in an unwavering, definitive, and entirely unscientific ranking.

Lo and behold, after the sesame seeds had settled, the glorious Big Mac came out on top.

So it caught me by surprise to learn that only one in five millennials has even tried the Big Mac. That’s according to a memo written by a McDonald’s franchisee, cited by The Wall Street Journal in 2016. According to the WSJ, Easterbrook said the company is beginning to rethink “legacy beliefs” as it looks to revitalize its stagnant share of the burger market.

Papa John’s Creates Poison Pill For One Special Customer: The Disgraced Papa Himself

The Papa John’s board of directors announced late last night that they would be adopting something that’s known in the business industry as a “limited duration stockholder rights plan.” This is an attempt to prevent Papa “John” Schnatter from reasserting his control over his eponymous company, which has done almost everything in its power to distance itself from him after he got racist on a conference call.

Papa John himself may have been evicted from company headquarters, been removed from marketing materials, and resigned as chairman, but he still has a seat on the board, and, crucially, he and “his affiliates and associates” own 30 percent of the company. The goal of the new rights plan is to keep him and his buddies from acquiring a controlling stake in the company and returning Papa to his throne. The deal contains a so-called “poison pill” provision that kicks in if anyone acquires 15 percent of the company, or if Papa’s group bumps its stake in the company up to 31 percent. If either of those two scenarios happen, then other stakeholders would be given the opportunity to buy up stock at half the normal price, thus diluting the power of whoever is making a power play.

“The adoption of the Rights Plan is intended to enable all Papa John’s stockholders to realize the full potential value of their investment in the company,” the press release said. Papa John has been on record many times as saying he got a raw deal; the company clearly expects a fight of some kind. However, when Papas battle, it is the pizza that suffers: Papa John’s stock is tumbling following this latest news.
